This is a vision indicator selected by the Nordic Council of Ministers. It relates to the target Life on land under the area A green Nordic region.

The indicator shows the proportion of protected land areas (in relation to the country's total area), in percent. For this indicator, two Nordic aggregates have been calculated: Nordic Region (Natura2000) and Nordic Region (five countries). The first includes the proportion of land in Denmark, Finland and Sweden designated under Natura2000. The second also includes National parks, Nature reserves and Landscape protected areas in Norway and National parks, Nature reserves and Habitat protection areas in Iceland.

Figures for Åland includes both Natura2000 and other protected land areas. The increase in 2009 is mainly due to the new 'Signilskär-Märket' protected area.

In the table, the Nordic Region (five countries) is comprised of the following countries/areas: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The Nordic Region (Natura2000) is comprised of the following countries/areas: Denmark, Finland and Sweden.

Åland is included in the data for Finland.
